Discover Tealby – a hidden gem in the Wolds

Sep 4, 2025Community

Nestled on the gentle slopes of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Tealby is a picture-perfect village brimming with character, history, and the kind of charm you expect to stumble upon in the Cotswolds. Whether you’re after scenic walks, historic intrigue, or simply a refreshing pitstop in a traditional pub, this little gem offers an unforgettable escape.

A charming village in the Wolds with many a story to tell

Situated just 3 miles north-east of Market Rasen, Tealby lies on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB, a location that not only offers stunning vistas and tranquil surroundings but also a micro-climate of its own.

Often described as one of Lincolnshire’s most beautiful villages, Tealby features picture-postcard thatched cottages, riverside walks, 31 listed buildings and historic heritage at every turn.

One such example is All Saints’ Church, built of distinctive orange-brown ironstone, which dates back to the 12th century and houses Tennyson-d’Eyncourt family memorials – the forebears of the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Tealby’s history is one peppered with famous names. For example, in 1807, the famed Tealby Hoard -around 6,000 Henry I and II silver pennies – was discovered here; some remain at the British Museum, while the rest were controversially melted down.

Satisfy your taste buds and rest your feet after a ramble

The Kings Head, widely recognised as Lincolnshire’s oldest thatched pub, is beloved for its home-cooked fare, real ales, and a relaxed, dog-friendly atmosphere (with a popular quiz night on Wednesdays).

If a cuppa, with a side of home-baked treats, is more your kind of vibe, The Vintage Tearooms offer a cosy Cath Kidston–style ambience with homemade cakes, light lunches, and an English breakfast menu – perfect for a restful pause and refuelling ramblers. Of which Tealby sees many.

Tealby is home to countless walks – one of note being a circular route that takes walkers by Rambler’s Church – and is traversed by The Viking Way, a long-distance trail covering some 147 miles, offering scenic ridge-top walks through the Wolds.

And, if you’re keen to stay more active than tackling a walk or two, there are plenty of outdoor and family activities nearby including Tennis & Bowls Club, Hall Farm Park (indoor play, tractors, soft play), Wild Pines Park (one of the UK’s largest rope courses), trout fishing at Otby Lake, Market Rasen Racecourse, and Golf Club.

Close to Louth, Caistor, Market Rasen, and Lincoln, for a tranquil weekend retreat, a gentle midweek stroll, or a family day out, Tealby promises charm and new discoveries in every corner.
