Discover Caistor – gateway to the Wolds

Jun 30, 2025Community

Nestled into the hillside on the northern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the charming market town of Caistor is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered. With its rich Roman history, welcoming community, quirky independent businesses and position along the scenic Viking Way, Caistor is the perfect destination for a countryside escape.

A town steeped in history

Wander Caistor’s narrow streets and you’ll be following in ancient footsteps. The town began life as a Roman military fortress – a ‘castra’ – and its layout still echoes that early design. Today, fragments of the original 4th-century Roman wall remain, and a monument commemorates the historic fortress that once stood watch over the surrounding Wolds.

Throughout the centuries, Caistor thrived as a centre for farming and trade. In the 19th century, it was one of the country’s largest sheep markets, drawing farmers and merchants from across the nation. Many of the Georgian and Victorian buildings still lining the market square – including the buildings that comprise 2-4 – were built during this prosperous time, and today the town is home to 56 listed buildings, making Caistor one of Lincolnshire’s most important conservation areas.

Caistor today: Character, culture and community

At the heart of Caistor lies its vibrant marketplace, surrounded by a host of independent shops, cafes and family-run businesses. From handmade gifts to freshly baked goods and artisan coffee, there’s always something new to discover.

  • Weekly Market: Every Saturday, the market square comes alive with stalls from local producers and makers.
  • Evening Street Food Market: On the first Wednesday of each month (3.30–8.00 pm), visitors can enjoy delicious dishes from a rotating lineup of street food vendors.

The Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre, housed in a converted Methodist chapel, is a must-visit. This welcoming space is home to the town’s library, a local heritage timeline, and a café that serves up homemade meals, cakes, and great coffee – the perfect place to relax and soak in Caistor’s history.

A walkers’ haven in the Lincolnshire Wolds

Caistor is proudly one of three ‘Walkers are Welcome’ towns in the Lincolnshire Wolds – and with good reason. It sits directly on the Viking Way, a long-distance footpath stretching from the Humber Bridge to Rutland.

One of the most scenic sections of this path, from Caistor to Tealby, takes in the highest point in Lincolnshire and offers panoramic views across open countryside – even as far as Lincoln Cathedral, 20 miles away, on a clear day. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual stroller, the rolling hills, winding lanes, and peaceful trails make Caistor an ideal base for walking holidays.

Food, fishing, and nearby finds

Just beyond Caistor, you’ll find even more to explore:

  • Caistor Market Place & Cornhill: In the central marketplace, you’ll find Helz Kitchen. Situated in ‘the Big Pink Building’, at Helz Kitchen you’ll find plenty of hot and cold food options as well as drinks. Across the way, in the Cornhill area of the town, you’ll also find Ted’s, a ****coffee shop and creperie with a loyal following. If you fancy more of a sweet treat, the Cornhill is also home to SweetieBelles, a traditional sweet shop where everyone in the family will find something they love.
  • Caistor Lakes & Wold View Fisheries: These peaceful fishing lakes offer a relaxing retreat with the former being home to a much-loved restaurant – the perfect place to unwind after a day on the trails.
  • Nettleton: A neighbouring village known for its ironstone mining history, The Salutation Inn, glamping pods, and quaint tea rooms.
  • Grasby: Visit the lovely All Saints Church, or stop in to The Cross Keys for a tipple and one of the best views of the valley below.
  • Claxby: Home to The Viking Centre, a self-catering hostel popular with walkers and groups tackling the Viking Way.
